Context gets better over time.

The index moves through three states. Your product should key off the state, not the clock.

"starting"Starting
"ready"Ready
"complete"Complete

Starting

Rollup is processing an initial sample of the library. Your product can wait or use the returned context conservatively.

Ready

Enough representative history has been processed for context-aware product behavior. This does not necessarily mean the entire camera roll has been indexed.

Complete

Available historical media has been processed. Long-term frequencies and changes over time have the strongest coverage here.

Progressive processing#

Rollup prioritizes diversity across the library before depth.

For example, seeing representative moments from three years of history is often more useful for personalization than completely processing only the user’s most recent month first.

After initial processing, new moments are incorporated incrementally.

Readiness across the three operations#

  • Profile refreshes as new evidence arrives. Read coverage and freshness before reusing a cached result.
  • Query depends on evidence relevant to the question. A ready index can still lack enough history to answer it.
  • Search only considers media already indexed and still authorized. An empty result is not proof that the user has no matching media.
